During her three months as a volunteer for the largest Austrian NGO in Sri Lanka, Isabel Eastman, a self-proclaimed " innocent abroad ", discovered every week a new aspect of a country in turmoil after a natural disaster of that dimension : from the corruption of the government and NGOs, the allure of the landscape that remained untouched from the disaster and from development, the encouraging initiative of more responsible locals, the chilling distance of the foreign aid workers, to the quiet undercurrent of suffering expressed through a child's drawing or an older man's midnight sobbing. The " Letters " are a routine that not only help to find a meaning in chaos but an affirmation of life that is the effort to capture its transience through words.
