Jusqu'au siècle dernier, le décrottoir faisait partie des civilités et du rituel de l'entrée des édifices publics comme de l'entrée dans l'habitat individuel. On s'y essuyait la semelle au retour des flâneries dans la capitale boueuse ou des bois environnants. Ce petit accessoire dont il ne reste souvent qu'un trou au pied de la porte d'entrée raconte l'histoire de nos trottoirs, des promenades urbaines, des petits métiers comme celui du décrotteur, l'histoire d'un morceau d'architecture aujourd'hui considéré comme petit patrimoine à sauvegarder. Si l'on rencontre des décrottoirs aussi bien aux États-Unis qu'en Afrique, l'abondance de la moisson photographique présentée dans ce livre montre que Bruxelles est l'une des seules capitales européennes à offrir un si large éventail de ces ustensiles du temps jadis.

Until the last century, using a boot scraper was part of polite behavior and the ritual of entering public buildings as well as private residences. One wiped the soles of one's shoes on returning from a stroll in the capital's muddy streets or from a walk in the nearby woods. This small accessory, of which often only a hole remains at the foot of the front door, tells the story of our streets, of strolling through the town and of the small tradesmen such as the shoeblack ; it represents a fragment of architectural history which is today considered a small item of our heritage that should be protected. Although boot scrapers can be found in the United States and in Africa, the sheer abundance of the photographs featured in this book shows that Brussels is one of the only European capitals to hve such a broad selection of these items from a bygone age.

Tot de vorige eeuw maakte het gebruik van de voetschraper deel uit van de goede manieren en het ritueel bij het betreden van zowel publieke als privégebouwen. Na het flaneren door het modderige Brussel of de omliggende bossen werden de schoenzolen afgeveegd. Dit kleinood waarvan vaak niet meer is overgebleven dan een gat aan de voet van de drempel, doet het verhaal van onze voetpaden, van stadswandelingen en kleine ambachtelijke beroepen zoals schoenpoetser, van een stukje architectuur dat vandaag beschouwd wordt als een stukje erfgoed dat moet worden bewaard. Schoenschrapers zijn er zowel in de VS als in Afrika, maar de overvloed van het fotografische materiaal dat in dit boek wordt getoond, bewijst dat Brussel een van de enige Europese hoofdsteden is die over zo'n brede waaier aan voetschrapers uit.de tijd van toen beschikt.
